A 10 Lesson Curriculum on Who Jesus Is

What is the purpose of this study?

Read Matthew 16:13-20

In a powerful moment between Jesus and His disciples, Jesus turns to them and asks a seemingly simple question, “Who do you say that I am?”

Yet, what is truly remarkable about this moment is what Jesus did right before asking this question. Jesus first asked them a different question: “Who do others say that I am?”

Jesus knows that there are many false stories swirling in the culture around them about who He is—stories that could easily invade their own thoughts. So, Jesus first has His disciples name those false stories, knowing they will pale in comparison to the true story. After this, Jesus proceeds to ask His disciples the one question He knows truly matters: “Who do YOU say that I am.”

While Jesus could have spent time first disproving the false stories of the culture, He chose instead to follow up with the one question that truly changes everything. Even though the world may tell them a different story, Jesus knows what matters most is their answer to this one question: Who am I, to you?

Jesus is highlighting this question as the cornerstone of faith. Yes, it matters what we know about Jesus, but just as significantly, it matters what we believe about Him.

What we know about Jesus matters because it will shape what we believe. Belief, therefore, is taking what we know and declaring it as truth.

Finally, Peter’s response offers us the greatest of hope from this story. Peter answers, “You are the Christ.”

And it is this truth that Jesus declares to be the foundation of His church: Jesus is the Christ.

This is the purpose of this study. We will unpack both who Jesus is and why that matters for us. If Jesus is our healer, what does that mean for our pain? If Jesus is the risen Lord, what does that mean for our sin and suffering? If Jesus is God’s Son, what does that mean for our own sonship?

Why does this matter for our students?

 1) They cannot follow that which they do not know.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus calls out the Pharisees and scribes for their lack of understanding. Even though they were the religious leaders of the day, they were not worshipping the true God because they did not know Him. Romans 10:2 speaks to this same reality. There can be zeal without knowledge. People can worship without actually knowing the one whom they worship. If our students are to be true disciples of Jesus Christ, they must first know Jesus, the true Jesus. We cannot follow that which we do not know. Our students must first know who Jesus is before we can hope for them to ever faithfully follow Him.

2) A foundation that cannot be shaken.

Nowadays, there is so much noise vying for our students’ attention. They are a generation with more access to information than any generation before them. Yet, more information does not always mean more knowledge. Our students are constantly surrounded by competing narratives, and they are daily having to determine whom to trust and what to believe. If we want to see our students build their house on a foundation that cannot be shaken (Mt 7:24-27), then we must help them know the unfading truth of Scripture. Our students need to learn the truths of Jesus in order to fight back against the false stories the culture wants to give them.

3) Knowing Jesus, the true Jesus, changes everything.
Fundamentally, the reason this study matters for our students is because it is all about knowing Jesus, and knowing Jesus changes everything. In following Paul’s example, we, too, should seek to know nothing among our students but Christ and Him crucified (1 Cor 2:2), so that their faith may not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power (1 Cor 2:5). We can come up with the best studies, sermons, and small group times, but ultimately, it is only by knowing Jesus that our students will be changed.

Outline

Lesson 1: Jesus, Our Pre-Existent Christ (Jn 1:1-18)

  • Jesus always was, is, and forever will be our Christ. He was there in the beginning, and all of creation was made through Him.

Lesson 2: Jesus, Our Forgiver (Mk 2:1-12)

  • Jesus is the Son of Man and the power of God. He displayed His power by defeating sin and its power. Even though sin separates us from God, Jesus has healed that separation through the forgiveness of our sins.

Lesson 3: Jesus, the Authenticator of Scripture (Mk 2:23-28)

  • Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, and He both fulfilled God’s Word and authenticates the Word.

Lesson 4: Jesus, Our High Priest (Heb 4:14-16)

  • Jesus is both the sacrifice and the intercessor for our sins. He is eternally interceding as our high priest before God and, now, all who have faith in Jesus can draw near to God with courage.

Lesson 5: Jesus, the Judge of Man (Jn 5:19-29)

  • Jesus can do nothing apart from God because they are one. Jesus is both our judge and the one who has taken our judgment upon Himself.

Lesson 6: Jesus, God’s True Son (Mt 2:13-23)

  • Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. He is God’s true Son and our brother; and in Jesus, we are made into a new family.

Lesson 7: Jesus, Our Innocent Sacrifice (Mk 14:53-65)

  • Jesus is the only sinless one; He is our innocent sacrifice. In Jesus, we have righteousness and life.

Lesson 8: Jesus, Our Risen Lord (Jn 20:11-23)

  • By His resurrection, Jesus defeated death and sent His Spirit to indwell believers. And one day, all who are in Jesus will also rise to eternal life.

Lesson 9: Jesus, the Upholder of the Law (Mt 5)

  • The law shows us our need for Jesus and, by His sacrifice, the righteous requirement of the law is fully met in Jesus. Now, all who are in Jesus have been made right under the law.

Lesson 10: Jesus, Our Healer (Lk 8:26-39)

  • Jesus is our healer. He has all power and authority in heaven and on earth, and He cares for both our bodies and our souls.
